It is shown that music improves our state of being and increases our physical and mental health. Music makes your brain release dopamine - the transmitter that makes you feel good. Not only does it increase the feel good chemicals, but it decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol. By lowering our stress levels, our immune system can increase and is able to work more efficiently. Tapping to the beat of the music can increase the stress relieving effects even more. Drum circles have been found to be helpful in exactly this same way.
According to the World Health Organization, 350 million people worldwide suffer with depression. Usually depression can also interfere with our normal sleep patterns. Music can play a huge role in decreasing the symptoms of depression and even help with sleep. Hans Joachin Trappe studied this extensively. He even found how the type of music makes a difference in the results. Meditative and classical themed music helped the most with lifting the spirits of those suffering with depression.
Music can even help with physical pain. It was studied at Drexel University that music reduced pain in cancer patients. Again the type of music mattered. They found that meditative music played a big part in the results.
Music stimulates memory and cognitive function. A great example of this is how it impacts Alzheimer's patients and those with dementia. Patients responded well to listening to some of their favorite music. It helped them remember pieces of their lives. This could be because music awakens the areas of the brain that are still healthy. This was studied by Dr. Laura Mosqueda at the University of California.
Music also has shown great improvement with memory in students studying for exams. Students that study with music increased their chances of passing exams with high scores. Along with these findings, is the study at York University that showed music increased the verbal intelligence of children. Overall, those musically trained showed better overall verbal and memory skills. It also increases IQ and overall academic performance.
