The Gift of TRIGGERS: Turning Reaction into Awareness | T.J. Prieur | 4-2025

We often think of triggers as external forces something someone said, a situation we found ourselves in, or an event that stirs up intense emotion. But the truth is, triggers are not about the outside world. They are reflections of what already exists within us. When something triggers us, it’s because there is an unresolved emotion, belief, or past experience that still holds weight in our subconscious. This is why awareness of our triggers is so powerful, it allows us to see what lies beneath the surface, giving us a chance to address and transform what no longer serves us.

Instead of resisting or resenting our triggers, what if we saw them as gifts? Each trigger is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and understand ourselves on a deeper level. When we recognize that a trigger is not about the other person or the situation but about our internal landscape, we reclaim our power. We are no longer at the mercy of external circumstances; instead, we can take responsibility for our reactions and begin the work of shifting our patterns. This shift in perspective from frustration to curiosity, from blame to self-inquiry creates space for true growth.

The key is to not get stuck in the emotional reaction but to investigate the root cause. Where does this trigger stem from? Is it tied to a past wound, a childhood belief, or an unmet expectation? Simply acknowledging that we are triggered is a huge step. It allows us to separate ourselves from the immediate emotional response and consciously choose how we want to proceed. Rather than reacting impulsively, we can practice self-regulation, whether through deep breathing, movement, journaling, or mindful reflection.

By working with our triggers, we begin to rewire the subconscious mind. Instead of reinforcing old patterns of fear, anger, or self-doubt, we create new pathways of resilience, self-awareness, and growth. Each time we choose to move through a trigger with intentionality, we build emotional strength and clarity. Over time, our triggers lose their grip on us, and we find ourselves responding to life in ways that align with our highest self.

Ultimately, triggers are not something to fear or avoid but to embrace with gratitude. They are indicators of where healing is needed and where growth is possible. When we stop seeing them as obstacles and start viewing them as stepping stones, we step into a place of empowerment. Our triggers become the very catalysts that guide us toward transformation, self-mastery, and the limitless potential of who we are meant to become.
